Lucia Ann Seyranyan, M.S., LCMFT

Lucia Seyranyan is a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist in Maryland. She has earned a Master of Science degree in family studies: marriage and family therapy from the University of Maryland, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from the American University in Washington, DC. To enhance her work with families, and to widen her spiritual and religious understandings, she has, additionally, taken classes in pastoral counseling and theology from many different and diverse seminaries—ranging from the evangelical to Catholic as well as ecumenical and Orthodox. Additionally, she has pursued post graduate work in guidance counseling from George Mason University.

Before joining Safe Harbor, she had an opportunity to work in a variety of settings: as a night therapist at a shelter for battered women; as an outreach counselor and public information officer post-9/11 for Arlington County’s Community Resilience Project; and as a victim advocate and therapist in the Family Advocacy Program for both the Navy and Marine Corps. In addition to this experience, Lucia has also integrated her counseling skills with her faith, and has served as a counselor at the Counseling Center at the National Presbyterian Church, was the former principal of her Sunday School, and a volunteer chaplain at INOVA Hospital.

Her clinical interests and training have been particularly focused on areas of trauma, particularly intimate partner and family violence. While she was a student at the University of Maryland, she worked closely with the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and co-authored several articles for publication on issues around domestic violence, particularly in the African American population. She also co-authored a chapter on “Healthy Media Habits for Children” which was published in the Encyclopedia of Primary Prevention in 2003.

Lucia feels passionate about strengthening families and empowering individuals, and she believes strongly that this is best achieved when clients are able to do this within the context of their own spiritual framework. She is always humbled to see how the Lord works and is grateful for the opportunity to serve in this way. When Lucia is not working, she enjoys traveling with her husband, writing plays, and spending time with her niece and nephews.
